A good hunt doesn’t start at sunrise; it starts in the dark, long before the first shot echoes across the Flint Hills. The right hunting lodge in Kansas makes all the difference. It gives you easy access to the land and a comfortable place to return. Your group also has room to relax, clean up, and swap stories without feeling rushed.
If you’re still mapping out your trip, check available dates to see whether Marion is the right base for your hunt.
Hunt the Flint Hills Without the Hassle
A central base helps your group focus on the hunt instead of rebuilding camp each evening.
Mapping routes and access boundaries deserves attention. Download maps, save screenshots, and confirm regulations before leaving town.

Access the Best Public Land Near You
Public hunting opportunities around Marion give you access to a wide range of terrain, from wetlands and reservoirs to prairie and timber. Knowing where to go — and what rules apply — can make the difference between a frustrating day and a successful one.
Walk-In Hunting Access Kansas Online Atlas
Kansas’s Walk-In Hunting Access program leases private ground for public hunting during designated periods. The online atlas locates tracts, roads, and public wildlife areas. Check the atlas again shortly before your hunting trip. Tracts and conditions can change, so an old screenshot should never replace the current map.
Marion Reservoir Public Land
We’re lucky to have the Marion Reservoir. It’s about 4,300 acres managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. It offers a mix of public hunting ground and protected habitat. In the fall, it comes alive with waterfowl, and guests often share stories of strong duck and goose hunting in the area.
Around the reservoir, you’ll find native prairie, cropland, and timber along the shoreline — ideal habitat for a variety of game. Marked access points and gravel roads make it easier to navigate once you’re familiar with the layout.
Keep in mind that the waterfowl refuge area is closed to hunting and public access from early October through late winter to protect migrating birds. While hunters are in the field, families can enjoy fishing, boating, and wildlife watching. Those lake adventures are often some of the best memories of the trip.
Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge
Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge covers about 18,500 acres of wetlands, fields, and habitat near John Redmond Reservoir. Migrating waterfowl use the refuge during spring and fall.
Hunting is allowed only in designated areas under refuge-specific restrictions. Waterfowl hunting occurs south of the Neosho River, so review the current brochure carefully.
John Redmond Reservoir Area
John Redmond Reservoir sits along the eastern Flint Hills near Burlington. Corps-managed lands are generally open for hunting, except for developed recreation areas and restricted zones.
Use the official hunting map before traveling. It identifies open areas, refuge sections, roads, and locations where special restrictions apply.
We have some private land outfitters we always recommend. So, be sure to contact us at 620-382-3200 for more information.
Time Your Hunt With Kansas Seasons
Season timing shapes everything from your packing list to your daily schedule. Deer, turkey, upland birds, dove, and waterfowl follow different dates, permits, and legal methods.
Many guests plan their autumn trips around Kansas deer hunting. Before booking, confirm the current season, unit, weapon rules, and permit requirements with Kansas wildlife officials. You’ll also need the correct deer-hunting license and any required permits. Nonresident availability and application procedures can change, so never rely on last season’s details.
Fall brings cooler mornings, changing cover, and active migration across the region. It also turns a focused hunt into an easy fall getaway for couples or families.

Pack for Flint Hills Terrain and Weather
Prairie weather can shift quickly, especially around sunrise and sunset. Bring layers and prepare for wind, mud, uneven ground, and changing temperatures.
Pack these essentials:
-
Broken-in waterproof boots with good traction
-
Warm layers that stay quiet while moving
-
Rain protection and wind-resistant outerwear
-
Offline maps, a compass, and a charged battery pack
-
Blaze orange or other required safety gear
-
Water, snacks, first-aid supplies, and medications
-
Cases, locks, and storage for every firearm
Keep a separate tote for muddy gear. It makes the return easier and keeps your room comfortable.
Stay Close to the Hunt in Comfort
After a cold morning outside, small comforts stop feeling small. A warm room, private bathroom, dependable Wi-Fi, and a relaxed meal can reset everyone. A hunting lodge in Kansas should support more than sleep. You need a calm place to organize tomorrow’s plan and reconnect with your group.
Our historic Marion setting gives your stay more character than a roadside stop. We enjoy hearing where guests explored and watching tired hunters settle into an unhurried evening. Our property is also family-friendly, so hunters can bring their spouses or children.
Service animals are welcome, but we don’t allow pets. We do, however, have The Lodge at Spur Ridge Lodge Vet Hospital in town, which provides a relaxing facility for your pets to stay overnight.
Parlour 1886 offers a full bar during open hours. You may also bring your own alcohol to enjoy, or purchase some at Medicine Cabinet Liquor store in town. However, it’s not allowed in our restaurant.
Turn Your Hunting Trip Into a Getaway
A few extra hours can make the whole stay feel less rushed. Explore local shops, enjoy nearby trails, or find seasonal activities in Marion. Check for annual festivals and events, especially when family members travel together. Local activities give everyone more reasons to enjoy the weekend.
The best hunting lodge does more than shorten your morning drive. It gives you a comfortable place to recover, reconnect, and enjoy Marion between outings. So, plan your hunt, confirm every regulation, and reserve your stay with us. We’ll give your group a welcoming home base in the Flint Hills.
